Me again, with another part to the sorority series. Today I just wanted to answer a few frequently asked questions about sororities. I found these questions by just Googling frequently asked questions about sororities and picking 5 random ones. Remember that these are solely my opinions and I can only speak from what I've experienced at my chapter. While I have attended a few national conferences with ladies in my same organization from different schools I have been able to gain a different perspective on some things as well.
1. What will being in a sorority do for me?
I could go on and on about this one but I am just going to list a few:
- Leadership opportunities and skills
- Connections
- Resume builder
- Time management skills
- Life long friendships
- Community service opportunities
- Memories that will last a life time
- Financial responsibility
- Sisterhood
2. Is greek life just like they show in the movies and tv shows?
While every chapter is different I can speak for my own chapter and say absolutely not. I believe that movies and tv shows about greek life are very very exaggerated. Yes, there are sometimes unfortunate events that happen at certain chapters and those situations are handled at a national level. Overall I would argue to say no, greek life is not depicted in tv show and movies in the proper way. The movies gloss over all the academics, community service and leadership that go into running a greek chapter. There are strict policies in place regarding hazing and it is not tolerated.
3. How will being in a sorority affect a students GPA?
Greek life places an emphasizes on GPA and there is a minimum requirement for each chapter. Chapters encourage academic support. Often there are ladies in chapter that have the same majors and can help each other study.
4. How expensive is it to join a sorority chapter?
This will vary from chapter to chapter. Overall, chapter dues will be set by the national organization. It is important to consider what each chapters dues include or do not include. Don't be afraid to ask about chapter dues when you're in the recruitment process. Most. of my chapter worked and paid for their own dues.
5. Can one participate in other activities on campus while in a sorority?
Yes, absolutely! Chapters encourage their members to be active on their campus! A few of our sisters even started their own club. It is also a good way for greeks to meet potential new members and other people who may be interested in being greek. Being greek is a great way to find out about other campus activities and get more involved.
